DEAN, 47, DIES; HEAD OF VENEER FIRM FOUNDER OF CATHOLIC USO AND ACTIVE IN NORFOLK COMMUNITY CHEST Philip Dale Dean, 47, president of the Dean Company, of Chicago, which owns and operates the Dixie Veneer Company of Portsmouth, and several other veneer companies in the country, died yesterday at 3:15 in a Norfolk hospital. Son of the late Richard Dean and Mrs. Marie Louise Dailey Dean, he was a native of Chicago and had lived in Norfolk 24 years, residing at 7706 North Shore Road. The Dean Company, which acquired the Dixie Veneer Company in 1927, also has holdings in Australia and Africa. Mr. Dean was a founder of the Catholic USO in Norfolk and was active in the Norfolk Community Chest. During World War II, he served as a lieutenant commander in the Navy. A graduate of Georgetown University, Washington, he was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a member of the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club, the Princess Anne Country Club and the Virginia Club. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Miriam Burke Dean; one son, Philip Dale Dean Jr., of Norfolk; two brothers, Thomas A. Dean of Chicago, and Charles D. Dean of Norfolk; three sisters, Sister Mary Claude Agnes Dean of St. Louis; Mrs. J. F. Fitzgerald of Chicago, and Mrs. Army Dean of Mexico City, Mexico. The body was taken to the H. D.
