S.S. Dear, Former Official of Pilots, Dead Capt. Samuel Stuart Dear, 70, former Vice President of the Virginia Pilot Association, died Sunday at 8 o’clock in Richmond. Captain Dear was a son of the late Capt. Edward F. Dear, who was owner of the famous sloop named “Sally.” This vessel made frequent trips from Norfolk to points in Mobjack Bay and Chesapeake Bay. She was one of the largest and fastest boats of her type ever know in local waters. He withdrew from the pilot association shortly after World War I and went into the real estate business. He later became connected with the North American Assurance Society and was with that organization at the time of his death. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ida Lee Dear; two sisters, Mrs. Julia Dear Miller and Miss Mary E. Dear, of Norfolk; and a brother, Charles W. Dear, of New York, His mother was the later Mary Stuart Dear. Services will be held this afternoon at the grave in Cedar Grove Cemetery. The officiating minister will be the Rev. W.C. Gum, superintendent of the Norfolk Methodist District.
