JOHN DEBREE DIED YESTERDAY Last Of Old Aristocracy To Maintain Home In The City's East End Dr. John DeBree, a retired physician, for years one of the most prominent in Norfolk, whose family name is linked with Norfolk's colonial past, died last evening at 6 o'clock at the old family residence, corner of Main and Chapel streets. Death came suddenly and was a shock to his relatives. While Dr. DeBree has been in failing health for some time he was only critically ill for two days. He was 83 years of age. On account of the infirmities of old age Dr. DeBree had not been active for a number of years. He was unmarried. The DeBree family, of which Dr. DeBree was a member, were owners of a part of the Ghent section of the city at one time. DeBree avenue is named for the family, whose old estate it penetrates, and which is now dotted with beautiful homes. Dr. Debree's end came at the old DeBree home on East Main street. The DeBrees are the last of the old Norfolk families, who have maintained their home on East Main street, which was at one time the most exclusive and fashionable section of Norfolk. The DeBree home is at the corner of Chapel and Main streets. It is a colonial mansion of a type which attracts the eye of the passerby. Dr. DeBree was a son of the late John DeBree who was a purser in the United States Navy and afterwards in the Confederate Navy. While educated in medicine, he only practiced his profession for a few years. He was a man of means and lived a retired and reserved life. Dr. DeBree is survived by a number of nieces and nephews, among whom are Miss Mary DeBree Higgins and Edward Higgins, who reside at the old Debree mansion at the corner of Main and Chapel streets. ****************************************************************** The funeral of Dr. John DeBree will be held from his late residence, Main and Chapel streets, at 5:30 o'clock this afternoon and will be conducted by Rev. A. Coates, of Christ Episcopal Church. Interment will be made in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
