Degge died at 2 o'clock Saturday morning, aged 78 years. He was the first sheriff elected after the war and held that office until Virginia was made "Military District No. 1," when a northern man was put in charge by the military officials. He served many years as wood inspector and councilman. He leaves five children, John L. Degge, Misses Mary E. and Ida B. Degge, of this city and W.W. Degge. of Boulder, Col. and Mrs. J.A. Scott, of the Eastern Shore. He had been a resident of this city for sixty years. The funeral will take place from 826 Tunstall Avenue today at 3 o'clock. Mayor Riddick has ordered the city hall bell to be tolled at the hour of the funeral.
