Deming, formerly of Norfolk and late of Baltimore, arrived here this morning via the Chesapeake Line accompanied by members of the family. The funeral occurred this afternoon at Epworth M.E. Church, with services conducted by Rev. R.M. White, acting pastor of Epworth, in the absence in Europe of Rev. Dr. G.E. Booker. Members of the family served as pallbearers. The interment was in Elmwood Cemetery. Mr. Deming was the youngest son of Portius Rood Deming, of West Milton Vermont, and Sarah Carnes, of Philadelphia. For many years Mr. Deming held numerous positions of compliment and trust in Norfolk, his native city. His death will be recognized as a distinct loss in business and social circles in Baltimore. Mr. Deming had the honor of being vice president of the first Y.M.C.A., ever organized in the United States, which originated at the University of Virginia., from which university he graduated with honors. Only recently was he present at a large meeting held at Charlottesville, Va., when there was present the few remaining members of this class. He also represented the Virginia Conference as a lay delegate in the General Conference of the M.E. Church, South, held in 1870, which was the first time delegates were ever admitted. Funeral services of Joseph C. Deming, a former Norfolk man who died in Baltimore, will be held in that city this afternoon at 4 o’clock, after which the remains will be forwarded to Norfolk for burial in Elmwood Cemetery. Services will be held at Epworth Methodist Church tomorrow afternoon at 4 o’clock preceding the interment. Mr. Deming was a son of the late Portius P. Deming and lived in the city until 1876 when he moved to Baltimore where he became prominent in business and financial circles. He was a graduate of Norfolk Academy and the University of Virginia. He was a prominent member of the Methodist Church and was one of the four lay delegates appointed in 1870 to the first general conference of the Southern Methodist Church admitting lay delegates. Before moving to Baltimore, Mr. Deming was connected with the Commercial Bank and was president of the American Fire Insurance Company. Besides his widow he is survived by four children-Mrs. F.H. Lazenby, Mrs. Agnes D. Vail, Joseph C. Deming, Jr., and John B. Deming.
