Dent, 68, of 509 West Twenty-fifth Street, mysteriously injured about the head early last Friday, died at 12:45 p.m. yesterday at a local hospital without having regained consciousness. Dr. C.D.J. MacDonald, city coroner, said an autopsy showed Dent died of multiple fractures of the skull and a contusion of the brain, and that he apparently had been struck more than one blow on the head although the blows could have been caused by being struck by a vehicle or being thrown from one, the coroner said, adding his autopsy showed the skull was thin. Dent was found crumpled up and unconscious beside a confectionery on the northwest corner of Colonial Avenue and Twenty-fifth Street by a policeman early last Friday morning. He was taken to the General Hospital where an examination revealed eight skull fractures and a slight bruise on one knee. Investigation Fruitless Dent left his home about 5 a.m. to catch a Naval Base street car and make connections with the ferry to Newport News. He was not on the corner when the car passed, a detective said after interviewing the motorman, and so far no one has been located who saw him before the patrolman found him unconscious and bleeding from the head. Detective W.T. Walker, assigned to the case, stated Dent's glasses had been crushed by the wheels of a street car and his hat was found in the street. Little less than $2 he was known to have in his pockets when he left home could not be found on him. Either he was struck down by a vehicle and staggered to the sidewalk and fell or he was beaten unmercifully with a heavy instrument and robbed, detectives said they believed. Not the slightest clue has been found so far to indicate either. Dent was the husband of Mrs. Prudis A. Dent and son of the late Frederick L. and Mrs. Martha Dent. He was a native of Charles County, Md. and had been a resident of Norfolk 40 years. In addition to his wife he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Lydia Dent Wolfe and two brothers, Warren and Sydney Dent, all of Washington, D.C. and three step daughters, Mrs. A.J. Wood, Jr., of Norfolk; Mrs. William Scott, of Pennsylvania and Mrs. George L. Snyder, of Richmond. The body will be take from the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, 1501 Colonial Avenue, to Sacred Heart Catholic Church for funeral services tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
