"Bill" Dewar, Sr., completed his earthly journey Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009. He was a devoted, loving father and was surrounded by his family as he joined his lovely wife in the Lord's hands. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dixie, and daughters, Carol Anne Dewar and Nancy Dewar Powell. As a young man, Mr. Dewar served in the Navy for four years before becoming a federal civil servant. He retired from the position of aircraft production superintendent at the Naval Aviation Depot, Norfolk, in 1988. The son of James and Anna Dewar, he was a born in Elizabeth, Pa., June 10, 1930. He came from a large family of six boys and one girl. He married Dixie Nan Riley on July 30, 1950, in Oberlin, Kan., and moved to the Tidewater area. In the following years, he and Dixie raised six children and cared for many foster children. He participated in Boy Scouts with his sons and helped with the soap box derby. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed nothing more than watching his children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren play sports. He was an active member of Saint Stephen Martyr Catholic Church and of the Amazing Gray's. He delivered food for the Chesapeake Food Closet and was very generous with numerous charities. Survivors include his children, William A. Dewar, Jr., and wife, Pam; Marlinda Hodges, and husband, Dave; son-in-law, William Powell; Geralyn Hoggard, and husband, Buddy; Karen Neary, and husband, Jim; David Dewar, and wife, Ami; 16 grandchildren, Jason, Josh, April, Jennifer, Michael, Annie, Mandy, Jessica, Bobby, Allen, Jeff, Ross, Josh, Molly, Alex and Hannah; and 11 great- grandchildren. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, at St. Stephen Martyr Catholic Church by the Rev. Monsignor Michael McCarron. The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral Mass at the church. The family will also receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Chesapeake Chapel.
