DIGGS DIES SUDDENLY IN NEW YORK Norfolk Pioneer Confectioner Passes Away At Stamford, Where He And Mrs. Diggs Were Spending the Summer Information was received here yesterday of the sudden death on Wednesday night of Charles H. Diggs, a widely known and highly esteemed citizen of Norfolk, in New York State, where he recently went with Mrs. Diggs to spend the summer. The telegram announcing his death did not state the cause but as he had suffered from heart disease it is thought that his death was due to that affliction. His death occurred at the Grant House, Stamford, New York, where he was stopping. Mr. Diggs was the pioneer confectioner in Norfolk. In his earlier years, he was connected with Holt's dry goods store, on Church Street and later with the house of M. Umstadter. Mr. Diggs embarked in business on his own account at Commercial Place and Nivison Street, at the entrance to the ferries, and later moved up on Main Street, where he made a marked success in the confectionary and toy business. He founded and conducted for many years the business now known as "Diggs," in Main Street, and was reckoned as one of the most successful merchants in this line in the city. Several years ago Mr. Diggs retired from active business life, but retained a keen interest in the affairs of the city generally. He was a man of the most attractive personality and numbered his friends and admirers by the hundreds. Mr. Diggs was born in Portsmouth and was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christopher G. Diggs. The family residence was at the southeast corner of Court and South Streets. He was 62 years old. He is survived by a widow, who before her marriage was Miss Mary E. Weatherly of Baltimore, one brother, C.C. Diggs and one sister, Mrs. William Emmerson, of Portsmouth. His remains will arrive here this morning accompanied by Mrs. Diggs. ******************************************************************************** The funeral of Charles H. Diggs was held at his late residence, 500 Stockley Gardens, Ghent, yesterday afternoon and was numerously attended, including members of the Real Estate Owners’ Protective Association, of which he was president, and a delegation from the Board of Trade and Business Men’s Association, with which he was connected. The service was conducted by Rev. Thomas Waters of the Sacred Heart Catholic church and Rev. Father John J. Doherty of St. Mary’s Catholic church. There was a wealth of beautiful floral tributes, attesting the high esteem in which Mr. Diggs was held in the community. The interment was in St. Mary’s cemetery. The following were the pallbearers: W. T. Simcoe, Judge T. H. Willcox, Colonel John W. Oast, A. B. Schwarzkoff, Charles G. Metts, Joseph D. McCarrick, M. C. Ferebee and W. P. Dodson.
