Diggs, well known and highly respected, and one of the first citizens of the town, died Friday evening at 11 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. Borum, on Pine street, in the 72d year of his age. The deceased had been in failing health and had retired from labors several years ago. He was born in Mathews County, but moved here about fifty years ago. By trade he was a ship carpenter, and aided in the construction and repair of several of the battleships used in the Confederate service. During his long life here, by daily association with the members of the craft, as well as the public generally, he won for himself many true friends, some of whom have passed over the river into the silent realms of death, but many are left to mourn with the bereaved relatives. He is survived by four children--three sons, Messr. I.O. Diggs, O.R. Diggs, Rufus Diggs--and one daughter, Mrs. J. Borum. Telegrams were sent during the afternoon to out-of-town members of his family and Mr. Oscar Diggs, of Gardner, Me., left at once for this place. The deceased was a member of Berkley Lodge No. 167, A.F. & A.M. The funeral will be conducted from Memorial M.E. Church this afternoon at 3 o'clock the pastor, Rev. W. Asbury Christian, officiating. The interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery. The pallbearers will be as follows: Messrs. Leonard Hyslop, Sr., C.S. Rogers, J.W. McDonough, Edward Rudd, C.J. Colonna and Dr George W. Wallace. There will be two other pallbearers selected from the Masons.
