Dr. Dinkins was born in Norfolk and was a member of First Baptist Church Bute Street. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 38 years of service. He was the director of Norfolk Players Guild and Hunton YMCA for many years. He was also a member of the Hiawatha Beneficial and Social Association. The former mayor, the Honorable Vincent J. Thomas, and City Council named Oct. 23, 1983, as Dr. Albert D. Dinkins Day. He was predeceased by his three wives and is survived by one son, Albert Carter Dinkins and wife, Alice; sister, Mrs. Wilhelmina Smith of Norfolk; and a host of relatives and friends too numerous to mention. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church Bute Street, 418 E. Bute St., Norfolk, with Dr. Robert G. Murray officiating. The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday and will gather there at noon the day of the service. Hale Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
