Dobias, a resident of Norfolk, passed away peacefully in his home July 6, 2008, after a lengthy illness from the complications of diabetes. Michael Dobias was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Feb. 5, 1921, to the late Michael T. Dobias, Sr. and Anna Kopecs Dobias. He worked briefly as a coal miner before joining the U.S. Marine Corps. While stationed at the Marine barracks in Portsmouth, he met his wife of 65 years, Maryetta DeSilva Dobias, on a blind date. After their marriage, he served a year aboard the battleship Guam in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant from the Marine Corps in 1945. He continued his military service in the Naval Air Reserve and furthered his education through the International Business School of Scranton, Pa., while pursuing a machinist apprenticeship at the Norfolk Naval Air Station. He became a production controller in the machine shop and retired in 1976, after 30 years of civil service. During his retirement, Mike Dobias developed his creative abilities in woodworking, building unique furniture for family and friends. He also upholstered furniture and mastered picture framing to support his artist wife in a successful portraiture career. As business manager-partner they traveled the Mid-Atlantic states and exhibited in art shows for 25 years. Mike Dobias was a longtime member of Blessed Sacrament Church. He was a member of Mending Hearts Club and visited patients with impending open-heart surgery to give them comfort. He was preceded in death by his older brother, Joseph, and younger brother, John, (and nephew John Jr.) of Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Survivors include his wife, Maryetta DeSilva Dobias; two daughters, Marianne T. Dobias, of Annapolis, Md., and Kathleen D. Bayliss, of Norfolk; one son, Michael T. Dobias, Jr. and wife, Mary Williams Dobias, of Norfolk; four grandchildren, Holly Bayliss, and fiance, Jeff Kalkin, of San Diego, Calif., Robbie Bayliss, Zachary and Emma Dobias of Norfolk; two sisters-in-law, Peggy Dobias and Lurene Dobias, of Wilkes-Barre; two nephews, Joseph Dobias, Jr., and Paul Dobias; and two nieces, Mary Ann Lohman and Barbara Ann Dobias. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, in Norfolk, by Father Tom Powers. Burial will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Norfolk. Family and friends will honor his life at a visitation Wednesday from 7 until 8 p.m. at the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments.
