NORFOLK (AP) - E. Griffith Dodson—a lawyer, legislator and businessman who was 
cited by the 1962 House of Delegates for his three volumes of history of the 
General Assembly—died Tuesday in a Norfolk hospital.
The 84-year-old Dodson bore the honorary title of colonel, bestowed on him by 
former Gov. George C. Peery. He retired as Clerk of the House in 1962. He had 
served in that post for 28 years, during which he compiled the reference works 
on the history and activities of the Virginia legislature.
A native of Norfolk, Dodson took his law degree from University of Virginia in 
1907. He practiced law in Norfolk after his graduation.
He was a member of the Virginia House in the 1918-1920 sessions and served in 
the State Senate in 1922. He also had served as a Norfolk alderman.
Dodson managed real estate, hotel and banking interests. At one time he headed 
the Dodson Hotel Corp, through which his family owned and managed several large 
hotels in Virginia and Maryland.
While living in both Norfolk and Richmond, he participated in numerous local 
civic and fraternal organizations. He served on the State Commission on 
Conservation and Development from 1926 to 1934 and on the Democratic State 
Central Committee from 1916 to 1938.
Dodson's funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal 
Church in Norfolk. Burial plans were incomplete.
Dodson is survived by the widow and two sons, Robert W. Dodson, city editor of 
the Ledger-Star and E. Griffith Dodson Jr., a Roanoke lawyer.
