E. DOHERTY SUCCUMBS TO HEART ATTACK Labor Leader and Long Active In Political Affairs of Community William Emmett Doherty, formerly president of the Virginia Federation of Labor, long identified with organized labor here and for many years high in the councils of the local branch of the Democratic party, died yesterday at noon. He was 68 years old. Mr. Doherty was stricken with a heart attack Tuesday night at the Elks Club and was taken to his home at 705 Raleigh Avenue. He failed to rally after the attack, and died at his home. He had been in indifferent health for several months prior to the seizure Tuesday night. Funeral services will be conducted at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, of which Mr. Doherty was a member, tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Mr. Doherty came to Norfolk in 1900 from Richmond, his native city. He was a son of James B. and Mrs. Ellen Haywood Doherty. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Evelyn Butt Doherty; one son, William Emmett Doherty, Jr.; one brother, James B. Doherty, of Richmond and several nieces and nephews. On City Committee Mr. Doherty had been a member of the City Democratic Committee for a number of years and was a member of the steering committee. He was known as one of the party's most able and active workers in this section and had participated in many campaigns. He had been a delegate to many State and national conventions, the most recent of which was the State convention here in June of last year. Party chiefs last night deplored the death of a friend and fellow worker. Coincidental with his political activities, Mr. Doherty was prominent in labor affairs here. He was a member of the Norfolk-Portsmouth Typographical Union and served on many of its important committees. On several occasions he had represented the union as delegate to International Typographical Union conventions and other sessions. He was formerly vice president of the Norfolk Central Labor Union and had served the union in other capacities. Former Alderman Mr. Doherty had been a member of the old Board of Aldermen for several terms. When he first came to Norfolk, Mr. Doherty became connected with the printing firm of Burke & Gregory, with which he was associated for 19 years. During the World War he held an important position here with the Department of Labor. Not long after the war he formed, with Robert L. Keyser, the printing firm of Keyser-Doherty, of which he was treasurer until the firm dissolved about five years ago. The firm was low bidder of the printing of ballots here for a number of years. When Keyser-Doherty ceased to exist, Mr. Doherty was appointed registrar for the CWA in this section and held this position until the CWA closed its activities. During the past year or so he had not been active. Mr. Doherty was a member of Norfolk Lodge No. 38, B.P.O. Elks and of the Woodmen of the World. ********************************************************************** William Emmett Doherty — Funeral services for Mr. Doherty, whose death occurred at the residence, 705 Raleigh avenue, Wednesday at noon, were held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church yesterday morning at 10 o’clock. The Rev. Patrick J. Tierney officiated. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. Thomas E. Waters, the Rev. E. A. Brosnan and the Rev. Paul V. Heller were present in the sanctuary. There was a large attendance and a profusion of floral offerings. The casket was covered with clusters of Easter lilies, roses and fern. Large delegations were present from the various organizations of which Mr. Doherty was a member, including many prominent in political and civic affairs. During the service, Mrs. Stark A. Sutton sang “Abide With Me," with Prof. J. Harvey Stevens, organist. Interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery. The pallbearers were J. Hume Taylor, Frank A. Evans, Wiley W. Wood, O. C. Moore, Samuel Subers, Sidney Goldstein, Colgate W. Darden, Jr., Richard Moss, Ballard R. Keefe and C. O. Bell. In his address at the conclusion of the mass, Father Tierny paid a high tribute to the Christian life and character of Mr. Doherty. Services at the grave were conducted by the Rev. Patrick J. Tierney and the Rev. P. P. Brennan.
