DONOVAN DIED YESTERDAY Prominent Norfolk Business Man Stood High In Community--Funeral Friday David F. Donovan died at his home, No. 223 Holt Street, at 10 o'clock a.m. yesterday after an illness of pneumonia of about ten days in the 55th year of his age. Mr. Donovan was born in Ireland but came to this country in early life and he had resided in Norfolk for forty years. He was exceedingly popular with all classes of citizens and had been prominent as a business man for many years. He was connected with the firm of Donovan & Company, coal dealers, and was a director in many of the financial and other business enterprises of Norfolk, among these the National Bank of Commerce, The Merchants and Mechanics' Bank, The Seaboard Fire Insurance Company and the Elizabeth Land Company. He stood high in the estimation of the community as a citizen of unswerving integrity and honor. Mr. Donovan was never married but is survived by two brothers, Thomas Donovan of Norfolk and James Donovan of St. Louis. A few years ago he lost by death two brothers, William and John Donovan. The deceased was a communicant of St. Mary's Catholic Church, from which the funeral will be solemnized Friday morning at 10 o'clock. President Wm. T. Anderson, of the Board of Trade and Business Men's Association, has appointed the following committee to attend the funeral of Mr. David F. Donovan, which will be held from St. Mary's Catholic Church, Chapel and Holt Streets, Friday morning, February 8, at 10 o'clock. William H. Wales Jr., Jas. W. McCarrick, W.C. Cobb, Jos. O. Fivecash, R.D. Parrott, W.J. Woodard, J.W. Brown, Kensey Johns, Geo. H. Dawes, William H. Collins, Nathaniel Beaman, Peter Smith, Jas. V. Trehy, J.M. Umstadter, Hugh N. Page, Jno. F. Lawler, W.S. Tooker, A.J. Goodrich, T.B. Kight, F.F. Nash, Geo. W. Taylor, C.L. Wright. Other members of the association are requested to join the committee. ************************************************************************** The funeral of the late David F. Donovan was solemnized from St. Mary's Catholic church at 10 o’clock yesterday morning and was largely attended by friends and delegations from the Board of Trade and Business Men's Association, the banks and other business institutions. Requiem mass was celebrated by Rev. Father Doherty. Rev. Father Walsh and Rev. Father Kelliher occupied seats in the sanctuary. At the conclusion of the mass, Father Doherty, who had known and was intimately associated with the deceased for many years, delivered a beautiful eulogy on his life and character. During the service, Mrs. James Hughes rendered as a solo, “Abide With Me." There was a profusion of lovely floral tributes, among which were the following. An immense bunch of roses from the officers and directors of the National Bank of Commerce; a standing wreath from the officers and directors of the Merchants and Mechanics’ bank; a pillow from the Seaboard Fire and Insurance Company, and a lyre from the Atlantic Creosoting Works. The remains were laid to rest in St. Mary's Cemetery and the pallbearers were as follows: Honorary—N. Beaman, Robert Johnson, W. H. Wales, James W. McCarrick, William Hart, B. W Leigh, W. C. Cobb and Major Tazewell Thompson. Active—John R. Coleman, John F. Lawler, W. M. Hannon, Patrick Hart, M. McKevitt, W. J. Dilworth, Patrick Magee and James O’Rourke.
