In addition to her daughter, she left behind a son, Ed Hanson; two grandchildren, Ed Hanson Jr. and Jennifer Hanson; and a great- grandchild, Desirae Miller. She also is mourned by her adopted daughter, Debbie Walker. Mrs. Dorsey found her church homes at Salem Fields Community Church and Spotsylvania Presbyterian Church. Her belief in God grew each day. After spending most of her life in the Tidewater area, Mrs. Dorsey moved to Fredericksburg in 1999. Her last five years of life were devoted to volunteering thousands of hours to help in the daily operations of Salem Elementary and Parkside Elementary schools. She awoke each day with a determination to show up in time to fix coffee for the office staff and stayed late to finish last-minute copying. She will be missed. A funeral was held in Virginia Beach on Thursday, Nov. 18. A memorial service will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 11, at Spotsylvania Presbyterian Church, to celebrate her life. VIRGINIA BEACH - Shirley Hanson Dorsey, 77, went to be with the Lord, Nov. 16, 2004. Shirley spent the last five years of her life living with her daughter in Spotsylvania County, where she volunteered thousands of hours to Salem Elementary and Parkside Elementary, making herself indispensable to the staff. She is survived by her children, Ed Hanson and Shirley Theresa Hanson; a brother, Robert J. Welch; a sister, Marcelia Beard, and husband, Joseph; two grandchildren, Eddie Hanson and his companion, Brandi Miller, and Jennifer Miller; her great- granddaughter, Desiree Hanson; an adopted daughter, Debbie Walker; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral will be conducted at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach chapel, Thursday at 2 p.m., with interment to follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
