He was a son of the late Smith and Mrs. Sophia Seeley Douglass, of Elizabeth City. He was a former member of the Berkley Company, No. 8 Fire Department, but for the last several years had been employed with the Panama Canal. He was well known, having lived here for a long term of years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lucy Newby Douglass; three sons, Elmer, J.J. Jr., and Alson Douglass; two daughters, Mrs. M.E. Short and Mrs. J.P. Hampshire, Jr., of this city; two sisters, Mrs. Caleb Williams, of Norfolk and Mrs. W.L. Waldorf, of Elizabeth City; two brothers, John A. Douglass, of Baltimore, and Smith Douglass, of Chicago, and three grandchildren. Mr. Douglass held membership in the following orders: Chesapeake Tribe No. 50, Improved Order of Red Men; Tidewater Council, No. 30, Junior Order United American Mechanics; Lee Lodge, No. 74, I.O.O.F.; Berkley Camp, No. 46, W.O.W.; Maple Leaf Club, No. 3, Virginia and Marine Engineers Local No. 9, of Norfolk. The body will be taken from the residence, 720 West Liberty Street, to the funeral home of E. Lee Cox, 124 East Berkley Avenue, Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock, where funeral services will be conducted. Burial will be in the family lot in Magnolia Cemetery.
