A native of Medan, Syria, he came to this country as a child and attended public schools in Summit, N.J. He permanently moved to Norfolk in 1912 after having worked at Ocean View for 15 years with an ice cream concession during the summer resort season. During the winter, he became a professional photographer and he established the first 24-hours developing and printing service in Norfolk. He subsequently became manager of the Doumar Cone Co. in 1920, and developed full- time confectionery stores and an ice cream shop at Ocean View Park and in Norfolk. Doumar’s brother, Abe, had an ice cream concession at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. His feature was a “cornucopia” or a twisted waffle containing ice cream. The Doumar family has claimed to have invented the ice cream cone. They operated ice cream concessions from Coney Island, N.Y., and on the New Jersey coast after the St. Louis Fair and opened a stand in Ocean View in 1907. He was president at his death of Doumar’s Cone and Barbecue, Inc. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Norfolk, Elks Lodge 38, and 21st Street Business Area Association. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Margot Meshala Doumar; three sons, Albert G. Doumar, Victor G. Doumar and Robert G. Doumar of Norfolk; two sisters; Mrs. Jennie D. Khoury of Florence, S.C., and Mrs. Helen D. Lovejoy of Alexandria; and nine grandchildren. The Rosary will be recited tonight at 8 in H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Memorial donations may be sent to a charity of choice.
