Dowd, 80, formerly of Norfolk died at Roanoke Hospital Sunday at 10:30 p.m., after an illness of six and one half months. A native of Carthage, N.C., he was a son of James D. and Emaline Dowd. He was a resident of Norfolk for 45 years prior to going to Roanoke two years ago to make his home with Mr. and Mrs. Vernon L. Duncan. His late wife was the former Virginia Sturgis. Mr. Dowd was a member of Ghent Methodist Church, Norfolk. In addition to his step-son, Vernon L. Duncan, Roanoke, he is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Mary McIntosh, Mrs. Jennie Smith and Miss Ada Dowd, of Rockingham, N.C., a brother, Rosser Dowd, of Rockingham. The body will be taken from the Cox Funeral Home to Elmwood Cemetery, where services will be conducted at the grave tomorrow at 11 a.m. by the Rev. John H. Pearson, pastor of Ghent Methodist Church.
