The Norfolk Virginian Pilot August 19, 1941
Mrs. Virginia Sturgis Dowd, aged 65, died at a local hospital yesterday morning 
at 10:10 o'clock after an illness of nine weeks.  She had been in failing 
health for a year.  She resided at 1217 Omohundro avenue.  Mrs. Dowd was the 
wife of Lawrence H. Dowd and daughter of Mrs. Margie Savage Sturgis Cooper, of 
Olney, and the late John Sturgis.
She was a native of Accomack County, Eastern Shore, and had resided in Norfolk 
for 45 years.  Mrs. Dowd was a member of Ghent Methodist Church.
Surviving her, in addition to her husband and mother, are a son Vernon L. 
Duncan, of Richmond; two brothers, J.H. Sturgis of Norfolk and Otho Sturgis, of 
Olney, and a sister, of Philadelphia, Pa.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Cox Funeral Home, 631 Westover 
avenue, tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock,  The Rev. W.P. Watkins, pastor of 
Ghent Methodist Church, will officiate.  Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
