Cyclops Samuel Dowdy, One-Time Chief Engineer of Ill-fated Craft, Dies Here Samuel Dowdy, aged 62, former chief engineer of the Cyclops, naval collier, whose strange disappearance in June 1918 remains one of the mysteries of the sea, died yesterday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at his home, 231 West Twentieth Street. Mr. Dowdy served as engineer aboard the Cyclops during her last cruise before her strange disappearance. His son, Samuel G. Dowdy, also an engineer, was among the members of the Cyclops' crew never accounted for. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary S. Dowdy; a daughter, Mrs. Paul W. Jones; a son, Thomas G. Dowdy and six grandchildren, all of Norfolk. Mr. Dowdy was a native of Norfolk County, but had made his home in Norfolk for 40 years. He was a charter member of Corinthian Lodge No. 266, A.F. & A.M., Washington Lodge I.O.O.F. and Knox Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Granby and Twenty-ninth Streets. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
