                         Dr. J. Walter Downer Dead   

The Baltimore Sun of yesterday has the following account of the death in that 
city of Dr. J. Walter Downer, formerly of Norfolk.
"Dr. J. Walter Downer, a dentist of Washington, died at the Stafford Hotel 
Saturday of a complication of diseases.  He had been at Johns Hopkins Hospital 
under treatment, but left there several weeks ago, when it was learned that he 
could not be cured.  He went to the hotel and continued getting worse and had to 
remain there.  Dr. Downer was born in King William County, Va., July 21, 1855.  
He practiced dentistry in Norfolk, Va. and other places.  Two brothers survive 
him.  One of them, W.J. Downer, of near Richmond, was in Baltimore yesterday 
arranging to take the body to Norfolk today for burial."

DOWNER - Died in Baltimore, Saturday, August 3d, DR. J. WALTER DOWNER, in the 
47th year of his age.
The funeral services will be held at Elmwood on the arrival of the Baltimore 
steamer.

All that was mortal of the late Dr. J. Walter Downer arrived here yesterday 
morning via the Chesapeake Line from Baltimore.  The remains were met at the 
wharf by friends of the deceased.  The interment was in Elmwood Cemetery, the 
services at the grave being conducted by Rev. Dr. B.D. Tucker, of St. Paul's 
Episcopal Church.  The casket was borne by six colored men.  The honorary 
pallbearers were from the Virginia Club, of which the deceased was a member, as 
follows: Messrs. R.B. Cooke, L.W. Childrey, E.V. Bradford, J. Thomas Peele, 
Richard H. Wright, George McK. Bain, Harry T. Campbell and B. Watkins Leigh.
