Downes, an employee of Hale and Company, and captain of Hale’s yacht, the “Gladys,” was held at Hale’s Chapel, 920 Wide Street, where the skipper registered as his local residence, Monday, November 28. The Rev. W. L. Hamilton, pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church, officiated. The deceased, a native of North Carolina, had lived in this city for 35 years. He was formerly a hotel waiter, but in later years had come to love his employment and association with Hale and Company to such an extent that he regarded the company’s establishment as his home. He leaves a number of relatives and friends. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery.
