Norfolk Virginian Pilot September 10, 1951

Frederick Downing, 60, State Supervisor, Bureau of Apprenticeship, United States 
Department of Labor, of Norfolk, died yesterday in a Norfolk hospital after a 
brief illness.
He was the husband of Mrs. Ruth Elliott Downing and son of the late Thomas and 
Sarah Richardson Downing.
He was a lifelong resident of Norfolk and had been with the Department of Labor 
since 1939. He formerly worked as a naval machinery inspector at the Naval Base.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Robert F. Barnum, 
of Norfolk;  one son, James H. Downing, of Stanford, Conn.; four grandchildren, 
Theresa and David Barnum and Judith and James H. Downing; one brother, Cornelius 
Downing, of Norfolk; two sisters, Miss Katherine Downing and Mrs. M.J. Holland, 
of Norfolk.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Holy Name Society, Knights 
of Columbus Lodge 307, Catholic War Veterans Post 60, National Internal Affairs 
Commission of the American Legion, Pickett Buchanan Chapter, Sons of 
Confederacy, B.P.O.E. No. 38, Local 716, International Association of 
Machinists, Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 4, Ensign, United States Naval 
Reserve and a veteran of World War I.
The body will be removed from the H.D. Oliver Funeral Home today to the 
residence, 207 West 37th Street, where rosary services will be conducted tonight 
at 8 o'clock.
Funeral services will be conducted in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church tomorrow 
at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Frederick Downing — Funeral services for Mr. Downing, who died Sunday, were 
conducted at Sacred Heart Catholic Church yesterday at 10 a.m. by the Rev. 
Edward W. Johnston, pastor. The Rev. M. J. Harrison and the Rev. J. J. Bannon 
were present in the sanctuary. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery. The 
pallbearers were D. C. Moore, John Twohy, II, John Bashara, A. A. Johnson, Lee 
F. Lawler and Stevens J. Higgins.
