P. DOWNING TO BE REBURIED ; DIED IN ACTION First Lieutenant Killed On Flight in Egypt; Services Saturday The body of First Lt. Frederick Paul Downing, AAF, 27, who was killed February 23, 1945, on a flight between Khartoum and Cairo, Egypt, will arrive in Norfolk today. He was the son of Fred Downing and of Mrs. Ruth Elliott Downing. A native of Norfolk, he was a graduate of Holy Trinity High School and of Calvert Hall College, Baltimore. An instrument maker at the Naval Air Station before enlisting in the AAF in December, 1941, he received his wings and commission at the Columbus Air Base, Columbus, Miss., in January, 1943. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society and of Aircraft Local No. 716, International Association of Machinists. Besides his parents, survivors include a brother, James H. Downing, a sister, Mrs. Robert F. Barnum and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Sarah E. Elliott. He will be taken from the home of his parents at 207 West 37th Street to Sacred Heart Church, where funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Rosary services will be conducted at the residence tomorrow at 8 p.m. ************************************************************************ Funeral services for Lieutenant Downing, son of Fred and Mrs. Ruth Elliott Downing, were held yesterday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. Edward W. Johnston, pastor, officiating. The Rev. Joseph V. Brennan, the Rev. B. J. McKenna, the Rev. Francis Klemmer and the Rev. John J. Bannon were present in the sanctuary. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery. A volley was fired by a firing squad and a bugler sounded "taps" at the grave. Pallbearers were Thomas D. Crump, A. E. Price, Jr., John F. Piedmont, David B. Lawrence, Jr., Alvah Hyslop, Jr., and Edward R. Remstedt.
