Downing, Employed in Navy Yard, Succumbs On Way To Work While on his way to work in the Navy Yard at 7:40 o'clock yesterday morning, James H. Downing, an engineer, living at 531 West Raleigh Avenue, Norfolk, dropped dead on the northeast corner of County and Crawford Streets. When Mr. Downing fell to the pavement, many of his fellow employees of the Navy Yard, who like himself were hurrying to their work, ran to his assistance, and carried him into a nearby shop. Later he was taken to police headquarters, a block away. Doctors Cooke and Holladay were summoned, but Mr. Downing was dead when they arrived. Mr. Downing had been complaining for some time, telling his friends that he considered himself a victim of indigestion. Last week he was obliged to remain away from his work and go under a doctor's care. He returned last Monday, however. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. E. Anthony, of Portsmouth Aerie, No. 558, went to police headquarters when he heard of Mr. Downing's death and gave such assistance as a brother Eagle could under the circumstances. Mr. Downing is survived by his mother, Mrs. Sarah Downing and a brother, Cornelius Downing. *************************************************************************** The funeral of the late James Downing was held from the Sacred Heart Catholic church at 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon and was attended by a large concourse, including the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, Norfolk, Eagles, Knights of Columbus and the Spanish American war veterans, of which organizations the deceased was a member.
