Virginian Pilot December 15, 1901

Mr. Thomas J. Downing died at his home on Clarke Street, at 6:20 o'clock 
yesterday evening, after a lingering illness from paralysis, aged 67 years. He 
is survived by a widow and six children. The funeral will be held from the 
Sacred Heart Catholic Church Monday morning at 10 o'clock.

The funeral of Mr. Thomas J. Downing, who died at his home on Clarke street 
Saturday night, was held from St. Mary's Catholic church, Norfolk, at 10 o’clock 
yesterday morning. The service was conducted by the pastor, Rev. Father Drake. 
The interment was in St. Mary’s cemetery. Following were the pallbearers: 
Pickett-Buchanan Camp, Confederate Veterans — Charles E. James and R. S. 
Broughton.
Citizens — F. Twiddell, A. Sauter, J. Fogarty and M. Enright.
