Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Monday, October 23, 2000 
Beryl Overby Downing of the 1100 block of Craig St. died Oct. 19, 2000.

Born in Chesapeake, Mrs. Downing was a retired Community Center supervisor for
the City of Norfolk Department of Parks and Recreation after 29 years of
service. She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church-Berkley, a deaconess, a
former superintendent of Church School and a member of the Hospitality
Committee. She was a lifetime member of the Beacon Civic League. She was the
widow of Horace C. Downing .

She is survived by four nieces whom she reared as her daughters, Sharon O.
Scott, Beryl O. Howcott, both of Norfolk, Janice O. Thomas of Somerset, N.J.,
and Rhonda O. Haskins of Reisterstown, Md.; a brother-in-law, Elder Melvin
Downing of Chesapeake; sisters-in-law, Sallie Overby of Chesapeake, Marjorie
Overby of Norfolk; a cousin, Cora Durham of Chesapeake; and a host of other
relatives and friends. She was predeceased by a sister, Lucille O. Sumler and
two brothers, Jesse W. Overby and Deacon Eliston Overby.

A funeral will be held at noon Tuesday at Mount Zion Baptist Church-Berkley by
Dr. Charles Hart. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Family will receive
friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Metropolitan Funeral Service, Berkley Ave. The
body will be placed in the church Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. Family and friends will
assemble at 11 a.m. Tuesday at 1113 Craig St., Norfolk, for the funeral procession.
