Funeral services for Lieutenant Downing, son of Fred and Mrs. Ruth Elliott 
Downing, were held yesterday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the 
Rev. Edward W. Johnston, pastor, officiating. The Rev. Joseph V. Brennan, the Rev. 
B. J. McKenna, the Rev. Francis Klemmer and the Rev. John J. Bannon were present 
in the sanctuary. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery. A volley was fired by a 
firing squad and a bugler sounded "taps" at the grave. Pallbearers were Thomas D. 
Crump, A. E. Price, Jr., John F. Piedmont, David B. Lawrence, Jr., Alvah Hyslop, 
Jr., and Edward R. Remstedt.
