George W. Downing died yesterday morning at 9:10 o’clock at his residence, 134 
West Tenth street, following a lingering illness. Mr. Downing was well known and 
highly esteemed, having spent the past 43 years in Norfolk. He was a native of 
Ireland and was 73 years old. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Kate D. 
Gregory, Mrs. P. C. Dozier and Mrs. R. L. Liles of Norfolk and Mrs. A. C. Morecock 
of Portsmouth and by one son, Edmund B. Downing of Norfolk. The funeral will take 
place Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock at St. Mary’s Catholic church. Interment will 
be in St. Mary's cemetery.
