Virginian-Pilot  December 18, 1901
The funeral of Mr. Thomas J. Downing, who died at his home on Clarke street 
Saturday night, was held from St. Mary's Catholic church, Norfolk, at 10 o’clock 
yesterday morning. The service was conducted by the pastor, Rev. Father Drake. The 
interment was in St. Mary’s cemetery. Following were the pall-bearers:
Pickett-Buchanan Camp, Confederate Veterans — Charles E. James and R. S. 
Broughton.
Citizens — F. Twiddell, A. Sauter, J. Fogarty and M. Enright.
