Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Saturday, April 17, 1999 
NORFOLK - Horace C. Downing, 82, of the 1000 block of Craig St., died April 13,
1999, in a local hospital.

Born in Norfolk, he graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and attended
Norfolk State College. He retired as a printer from Journal & Guide and as a
housing inspector from the city of Norfolk, both after 30 years of service. He
was a member of New Central Baptist Church where he was a trustee and chairman
of Ward 4 and a member of the Men's Club. He was past president of the Beacon
Light Civic League; board member of the Bank of Hampton Roads; Norfolk
Democratic Committee; Berkley Multi-Purpose Advisory Board; and Southside
Seniors Club. Mr. Downing had received more than 50 awards, citations and
accolades from various organizations for his community service.

Mr. Downing is survived by his wife, Beryl Downing of the home; his four girls,
Sharon Scott and Beryl O. Hewcott, both of Norfolk, Janice O. Thomas of
Chesapeake and Rhonda O. Haskins of Baltimore; a brother, Melvin Downing of
Chesapeake; an aunt, Isodora Jones of Brooklyn, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and a
host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

A funeral will be held at noon Monday at New Central Baptist Church, Norfolk, by
Dr. Charles Hart. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Family and friends will
assemble at the church at 11:30 a.m. His remains will be placed in the church at
10 a.m. Metropolitan Funeral Service, Berkley Avenue, is handling arrangements.
