Dudley, 52 year old Norfolkian succumbed to a sudden stroke of apoplexy on Saturday, December 27, at a local hospital, Norfolk lost one of its pioneer business men and one of its finest and most respected citizens. For 28 years, Mr. Dudley had been one of the best hat cleaners and blockers in the city. He had begun the trade as a sideline while working the moulders shop of the Norfolk Navy Yard, a quarter of hat renovation and he established a splendid business in this field after considerable study and experiment in modern methods. He was one of the first hatters to open a shop in Norfolk, white or colored. He married Miss Blanche Quetrell and nine children resulted from this union. All of these children are living. He was known as a devoted family man, having few interests outside his business and his home. He was a member of one of the oldest Norfolk families and he spent his entire life in the city. Mr. Dudley attended Bank Street Baptist Church. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Blanche Q. Dudley; four daughters, Mrs. Leroy Ridley, Newport News, and Misses Elsie, Millie, and Yvonne Dudley; five sons, Milton, William, Washington, Frederick, and Elbert Dudley; three brothers, John Dudley, Philadelphia; Samuel and Frank Dudley of Norfolk; a son-in-law, Leroy Ridley, Newport News; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Bertha Dudley. Eight nieces - Mrs. Mildred D. Peters, principal of the Laura Titus School; Miss Jennie Dudley, Mrs. Mertien Lomax, Mrs. Marie Douthit, Miss Rosa Dudley and Miss Dorothy Dudley, of Norfolk; Mrs. Florine Grave and and Miss Elouise Jackson of Philadelphia; and three nephews, Samuel Dudley of Norfolk; James Dudley of New York; and Jarrett Jackson of Philadelphia.
