Solemn requiem mass for the dead was said with Rev. John Doherty, pastor of St. Mary’s, as celebrant; Rev. Father Smith, of St. Vincent’s hospital, as deacon; Rev. Father R. A. Drake, of the Sacred Heart, church, as subdeacon; and Rev. Father Walsh, assistant pastor of St. Mary’s, as master of ceremonies. Rev. Father Brady, of Portsmouth, and Rev. Father Frivoli, of Staunton, occupied seats in the sanctuary. An eloquent tribute was paid the deceased, both as a citizen and devout Christian and consistent Catholic. At the offertory, Miss Smith sang very sweetly, "O Salutaris." As an appreciation of the uniform kindness and benevolence to them, the orphans of St. Mary’s asylum attended the obsequies in a body, as a token of respect. The floral display was very handsome. There were a number of persons present at the funeral from away, among them Mr. Matthew Duggan, of Philadelphia, a nephew of the deceased. At the conclusion of the services at the church, the remains were conveyed to St. Mary’s cemetery, followed by a lengthy cortege, where all that was mortal of an honored citizen was laid to rest. Following were the pallbearers: Honorary—Messrs. Thomas B. Rowland, E. Vance, William Hannon, Sr., Peter Smith, Walter Smiley, James O’Rourke, James W. Long and E. R. Joynes. Active—Messrs. Stephen Hogan, W. T. Hennelley, M. T. Friary, A. J. Smith, Frank Parrott, H. W. Dawson, Joseph Hennelly and James J. Brownley.
