VIRGINIA BEACH - Joan Mercer Dunstan, 73, died Sept. 3, 2008, at Sentara Norfolk 
General Hospital. Mrs. Dunstan was a native of Norfolk and a retired teacher for 
the City of Virginia Beach.

She was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church. She attended The College of 
William and Mary, graduated from the University of South Carolina and was a member 
of Tri Delta.

Mrs. Dunstan is survived by her husband of 49 years, William Morgan Dunstan; sons, 
William Dunstan, and wife, Becky, and two daughters, of Richmond; Stephen Dunstan, 
of Somerset, Va., Matthew Dunstan, and wife, Megan, and two sons and daughter, of 
Gates, N.C.; daughters, Patricia, and husband, James Mullin, and three sons, of 
Suffolk, Kathleen, and husband, Brian Vallent, and two sons and daughter, of 
Richmond; and her sister, Aline Blackman, of Bethesda, Md.

A requiem Mass will be celebrated in Good Shepherd Catholic Church Tuesday at 10 
a.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 1742 East Parham 
Road, Richmond, VA 23228. The family wishes to extend a very special thanks to Dr. 
Thomas Whelan for his skillful, compassionate and unwavering care.

Arrangements are in the care of Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield.
