A member of a prominent Norfolk family, Mr. East and three brothers — J. Frank, Thomas J. and William East, now all deceased — founded the Farmers Manufacturing Company about 50 years ago and disposed of the business in the early 1930's. He later had an interest in the Park Place Laundry. He was active in patriotic and political affairs, once running unsuccessfully for a seat on City Council. A charter member of the Glenwood Park Place Presbyterian Church, he had been a member of the Knox Presbyterian Church about 15 years. Besides his wife, Mrs. Emma Cole East, he is survived by a son, Samuel Bertram East; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was a native of Isle of Wight County but had resided in Norfolk most of his life. The body will be taken from the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home to the Knox Presbyterian Church for funeral services tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
