West School, died Tuesday morning in Norfolk General Hospital. She had been ill since Jan. 5. The funeral rites were held Saturday at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Bute street, with the Rev. E. Paul Simms officiating. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery under direction of Hale Funeral Home. Miss Edwards was born in Norfolk on June 17,1906. She attended elementary schools in Norfolk and was graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. Her bachelor’s degree was earned at Virginia State College in Petersburg and her master’s at Columbia University. The deceased began teaching at the old Armstrong School in 1925 and was assigned to West School in 1926. Her next assignment was to Smythe School in 1930, and in 1936 she was returned to West where she remained until 1944. Miss Edwards became teaching principal at Smythe in 1944, and in 1949 she became supervising principal at Smallwood School. She assumed a similar post at West in 1954 and remained until her fatal illness. The deceased was a member of First Baptist, Phyllis Wheatley YWCA board of management, and held membership in the Norfolk Teachers Association, Virginia Teachers Association and other district and national educational organizations. She is survived by a cousin, Miss Rosa Lee Carter, and other relatives. Miss Edwards lived at 912 Widgeon road. Miss Emma L. Cannon, a teacher at West School, has been serving as the administrative officer there since Miss Edwards became ill.
