April 7, 1936 FREDERIC EGNER DIES AT AGE OF 90 Retired Gas Engineer Served as Union Naval Lieutenant in Civil War Frederic Egner, 90, retired gas engineer and veteran of the Union Navy, in which he rose to the grade of lieutenant while still in his teens, died today at his home, 516 Quincy Street, after a short illness. Enlisting in the Navy when a mere youth, Mr. Egner's aptitude for engineering won him the promotion to engineer and lieutenant. He served aboard a naval vessel which helped maintain a blockade at Norfolk, Va. Mr. Egner was born in Germany March 5, 1846 and came to New York with his parents when 10 years old. After his service with the Navy he joined the New York Fire Department and rose to the grade of captain. Meanwhile he continued the study of chemistry and engineering subjects and left the fire department to become gas engineer with the New York City Gas Co. Subsequently he was gas engineer with a gas company at Norfolk, Va. Later he held a similar position with the Laclede Gas Co. at St. Louis, Mo. and then went back to Norfolk. His last active work was as engineer in charge of the installation of gas works at Fredericksburg, Va. He came to Washington some 26 years ago. Member of Lodge 60 Years For more than 60 years he had been a member of the Veritas Lodge of Masons in New York City and held the distinction of having some years ago been the lodge's youngest master. He also was a member of the Ruth Masonic Lodge of Norfolk, Va. Mr. Egner's nearest surviving relative is a cousin. His wife, the late Marietta J. Egner, died 38 years ago. Details of the funeral arrangements were to be announced later. ********************************************************************** Frederic Egner, who died yesterday morning in Washington, was a native of Darmstad, Germany and had a long, active and varied career in the United States. He came to Norfolk in 1879 and served the old City Gas Company as consulting engineer. Prior to that he had been in the United States Navy, from which he was honorably discharged July 5, 1866. Widely known among the older residents of Norfolk, Mr. Egner was active also in Masonic circles here and in New York. He was an honorary member of Ruth Lodge No. 89 in Norfolk and was a Past Master of Veritas Lodge No. 734 in New York. Funeral services will be conducted at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Burial will be in the family plot in Elmwood Cemetery.
