Daughter of the late John Gray Paul and Jessie Bouldin Paul, she was born on August 6, 1932, in Roanoke, VA. Johanna graduated from Jefferson High School, class of 1950, and furthered her education at Mary Baldwin College, where she became an accomplished pianist and earned a B.A. degree in Psychology in 1954. After college, she worked as an Executive Secretary for the Psychology and Urology Departments of Duke Hospital where she met the love of her life, David. In 1957, she married Dr. Thomas David Elder. Their 61 years of marriage was a testament to their devotion to each other. Together they built a wonderful family and shared cherished memories in their beautiful home, enjoyed wonderful friendships and many travels together. Johanna was a sustaining member of The Junior League of Norfolk; Norfolk-Tidewater Committee for Childcare; National Society of Colonial Dames of America; Westover Garden Club; The Chrysler Museum; and the Ruth Sargeant Circle of the King's Daughters. She was a committed member of Christ and St. Luke's Church where she taught Sunday School for ten years, served on Flower Guild and as Altar Guild Chairman for nine years, was a member of Profile and Search Committees and the Vestry, while volunteering many hours in the Beehive. Among her many skills, she enjoyed gardening, needlepointing, knitting, sewing, tennis, Mahjong, exercise class and flower arranging. She is known for being the best grandmother, for her knitted baby blankets and scarves, needlepoint treasures (Christmas stockings), flower arrangements, beautiful packages, family dinners at Thanksgiving and Christmas and cheering for football. She most enjoyed time with family, particularly with her grandchildren, neighbors and friends (especially Susan, Barbara and Geneva), her exercise group, vacations at the beach, Wintergreen house, and loving on her dogs. She will be greatly missed for her warm greetings, beautiful smile, many humorous euphemisms and unconditional love. She will continue to be a strong presence in our lives and hearts for generations to come (if not, she might "roll over in her grave" and "rattle the chains"). May peace be with her knowing the battle is won and she is in heaven saying, "Good Heavens!", "Oh Lordy David" "Oh my stars," "I am living in the lap of luxury!" "Hot dog!" Johanna is survived by her beloved children: Peyton E. Manley (Tommy), Martha E. Wallace (John), Katherine E. Bagay (Martin). She was a most proud and affectionate grandmother to: Kaitlin Manley, Meredith Wallace, Caroline Manley, Anne Bagay, Jessie Wallace, John Bagay, and Johanna Bagay. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, John Gray Paul Jr. (Spiz) and Huntington Peyton Paul (Hunt); son, Thomas David Elder, Jr. (Tom); and dear golden retriever, Sadie. A memorial service will be held at Christ & St. Luke’s Church, Thursday, September 12th at 11:00 am; reception to follow. Burial services will be private. The family wishes to thank Geneva Fallis for her unwavering care and friendship; Sentara Norfolk nurses, Salma, and the kind condolences of many life-long friends. Per Johanna's wishes, in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the SPCA of Norfolk, Christ & St. Luke's Church or charity of choice.
