A product of the Norfolk public schools, she earned her undergraduate degree at Virginia State University and her Masters of Education from New York University. She distinguished herself as an English teacher in the public schools of Norfolk where she served until her retirement. Harrietta involved herself in the politics of education, serving as a driving force in the Education Association of Norfolk. She served in numerous offices including president of the EAN, EAN Board of Directors, district president for the Virginia Education Association, Virginia Education Association Board of Directors, NEA Resolutions Committee and was a force to be reckoned with on the floor of the NEA annual conventions. Continuing her activism in education, Harrietta became a member of the Tidewater Community College Board and was the recipient of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. College Distinguished Service Award from TCC in 2001. Active in the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia, she was elected to the Standing Committee of the Diocese, the Bishop's Council of Advice, in 2000. She served the Standing Committee as its president at the time of her death. She had previously served in the Diocesan Department of Communication. As a parishioner at Grace Episcopal Church, Harrietta served on the Altar Guild, Vacation Bible School, the choir, was a member of the Vestry and served as treasurer of the church. She could always be counted upon to support the NEST program, an ecumenical effort to house and feed the homeless during the winter and fall months. No stranger to politics, Harrietta enjoyed her years as legislative assistant to the Honorable William Robinson (delegate, 90th District). She served in this position for more than a decade. She also served as the first African-American chair of the Norfolk City Democratic Committee, was its current parliamentarian, and was a delegate to the 1996 Democratic National Convention. Harrietta was a former vice chair of the Virginia Council on Human Rights, and the Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech Pathology. She was also chair of the Norfolk Youth Services Citizens Advisory Board. A recipient of many honors, she was given the prestigious Lambda Omega Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity ``Citizen of the Year Award.'' Harrietta was a life member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority having been initiated at Virginia State College. As a member of the Norfolk chapter, she held many offices including that of president. She was the current parliamentarian. Harrietta Eley quietly departed this life on April 1, 2002, at her home. She was loved and will be missed by many including her mother, Mrs. Lillian Jones; her son, Allen Jarrell , his wife, Donna Matthews, granddaughter, Marie, grandsons, Edward and Matthew; her granddaughter, Erin Kelley whom she reared and her great-granddaughter, Kayla Lillian Keene; and daughter-in-law, Myra Williams and grandsons, John and Robert Jarrell . Harrietta also leaves to cherish her memory cousins, Elnora Thornton and Malaika Bryant; sisters-in-law, Willie Mae Burkeen, Thelma Gibbons, Osceola Scott; a niece, Yolanda Perry and many other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her daughter, Laverne Jarrell Kelley and her son, John Jarrell Jr. A memorial service will be conducted by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Riddick Funeral Home. A wake will follow. The funeral will be held at Grace Episcopal Church at noon Monday.
