He was a graduate of William and Mary, the University of North Carolina and the University of Pennsylvania. He joined the English faculty here in 1921 and later taught at the University of North Carolina and Southwestern Louisiana University before returning here as a lecturer in English in 1957. Dr. Elliott was chairman of the English department at Southwestern Louisiana University from 1943 to 1956 and retired here in 1962. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and a number of honor societies. He was a founder and first secretary of the South-Central Division of the Modern Language Association and was also a member of the American Association of University Professors. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Luetta Cooper Elliott, a daughter, Miss Alice C. Elliott of Williamsburg, and a son, Lewis N. Elliott of Washington. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Bucktrout Funeral Home, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk.
