Augustus Elliott died suddenly of heart failure about 8 o'clock yesterday morning at the store of William H. Martin, dealer in hardware, for whom Mr. Elliott had been a salesman for many years. He was a native of Norfolk and one of its best known and most highly esteemed residents. He was in the seventy-first year of his age. Mr. Elliott entered the Confederate service with the Norfolk Light Artillery Blues and was in every battle his company was engaged during the Civil War. Immediately after the war, Mr. Elliott selected as his vocation the hardware business and the greater part of that time he was in the employ of Mr. Martin. Mr. Elliott was at his place of business until 7 o'clock Thursday night, was cheerful and apparently in the best of health. He came to the store shortly before 8 o'clock yesterday morning as usual and passed suddenly away while seated at his desk. The only other person in the store at the time was a colored porter. Mr. Martin arrived at the store a few minutes later in response to a telephone call and sent for Coroner Kight, who pronounced death as the result of heart failure. Mr. Elliott is survived by three sons, Walter W. Elliott, Gilmer T. Elliott, both attorneys at law and Harry H. Elliott. He was a member of Pickett- Buchanan Camp. The funeral will be held at his residence, Reservoir and Claiborne Avenues, at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon and will be conducted by Rev. Vernon I'Anson. D.D. The interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
