Ellis passed away peacefully April 16, 2011. A native of New York, he was the son of the late John and Irene Ellis and was the widower of his beloved wife, Lucille Brodeur Ellis. Mr. Ellis retired from the U.S. Navy after 30 years as a chief warrant officer 4. He served his country in World War II in the Pacific Theatre and, during his naval career, he served on 16 different ships. He also retired from the City of Norfolk in the Commissioner of Revenues office as a deputy grade 4. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association, Hampton Roads Chapter, VFW 3160 and the Fleet Reserve Association 60. He was also a 4th Degree Knight with Knights of Columbus 367 and served as the P.F.N. of the O'Keefe Assembly, and he was a member of the Ryan Club. Mr. Ellis is survived by his three sons, John Ellis, III, David G. Ellis, and Thomas J. Ellis; his two daughters, Kathryne Slavin, and Mary Drake; his five brothers, Raymond, Robert, Richard, Herbert and Paul Ellis and his sister, Jeanne Dupuis. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The family would like to offer their special thanks to Mary Blonts for the loving care and support given to Mr. Ellis. A funeral will be held in the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. at noon Thursday with Father Matthais Lusembo officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with a Challis Ceremony being held at 7 p.m. Burial will follow the funeral at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery with Military Honors. Following graveside services a reception will be held at the Knights of Columbus 367. Memorial donations may be made to the Kovar organization at 5201 Kennebeck St., Norfolk, VA 23518.
