Ellis Sr., 91, of the 6000 block of S. Pelican Crescent, died Oct. 24, 1999. Born in Norfolk, he was the oldest of four children of the late Charlotte Fields Ellis and the late George Thomas Ellis. He had retired after 30 years from Norfolk Linen Service and had also retired after 10 years from Southern Office Supply, Chesapeake. He was an active member of Woodland Avenue Baptist Church in Norfolk, where he participated in the Deacon Ministry and Trustee Ministry and was a choir member. Mr. Ellis was also a member of Broad Creek Civic League. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Clara M. Ellis; three daughters and their husbands, Maryland E. and John Smith of Chesapeake, Jenette E. and Ulysses Sapp of Portsmouth, Jean E. and Kenneth Keeling of Pittsburgh; three sons and their wives, John D. Ellis Jr. and Jessie Ellis of Hampton, Edwin L. and June Ellis of Suffolk, Charles F. and Barbara Ellis of Lawton, Okla.; a brother, Holland D. Ellis and wife, Rosa, of Gainesville, Fla.; 21 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; three nieces, Madeline Milborne Hall of Norfolk, Delores Robinson of Atlanta and Charlene Smith of Williamsburg; two nephews, John Milbourne of Virginia Beach and Pedro Ellis of Washington, D.C.; and three special friends, Mable Jones, Thelma Riddick and Gladys B. Whitaker, all of the Hampton Roads area; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by two brothers, Fitzhugh Ellis and George B. Ellis. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Woodland Avenue Baptist Church, 2735 Woodland Ave., Norfolk, by the Rev. Serafio Fontanilla. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery , Norfolk. Community Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, is in charge.
