Erbe, 83, passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2011. She was a former employee at a local law firm, an optometrist, and at Smith and Welton, but, primarily, was a Navy wife who moved 16 times in 20 years. She was a loving mother and grandmother. Born in Hammonton, N.J., July 23, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Angela Romero Cantrell and Foyle Cantrell. Fran was raised in Manhattan, N.Y., and graduated from Julia Richmond High School. She was a Roman Catholic and a founding member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and a former member of the choir. She was also a past president of the Retired Officers Wives Society "ROWS" and was a member of the Norfolk Elks Lodge No. 38. She was a former volunteer of Meals on Wheels, a Gray Lady with Eastern State Hospital and was a block captain for the Saratoga and East Lynne Civic League. Left to cherish her memory are her beloved husband of 63 years, Raymond R. "Rudy" Erbe; a son, Allan Erbe, of Virginia Beach, and his wife, Kay, of Chesapeake; a sister, Margaret Freiler, of Connecticut; two grandchildren, Elliott Erbe, of Portsmouth, and Emily Erbe, of Virginia Beach; six nieces, Mary Lou Sentell, of Kentucky, Debbie Glover, Chris Trombley, Denise Yates, Debbie Atwater and Cathy Frieta, all of Connecticut; and four nephews, Ronald Rhine, Robert and Mark Morse and Marty Freiler, all of Connecticut. A funeral Mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 9, at St. Pius X Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Nixon Negparanon officiating. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. A Christian wake will be conducted at 6 p.m. today at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church, 7800 S. Halprin Drive, Norfolk VA 23518 or a favorite charity.
