He was born in Newport, Rhode Island, on June 14, 1922, and lived in Norfolk since 1960. He was the son of the late Louise Caron and William J. Erbe and was preceded in death by his loving wife, Fran Cantrell Erbe, and his siblings; Geraldine Sentell, William Erbe, Jr., Donald, and Douglas Erbe. "RR" joined the United States Navy in 1940, at the age of 18. His first duty station was at Pearl Harbor aboard the USS Chandler, the first of 10 ships he served on during his military career. The Chandler was on patrol outside of Pearl on December 7, 1941. He also saw action in Battles of Midway, Anzio, and Kiska. RR spent most of World War II at sea in the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres. Also, he made 4 "Med" cruises, as well as a Persian Gulf Cruise. He retired from the Navy in 1960 on the Franklin D. Roosevelt. Following his military career, he worked briefly for Vitro Labs, Rockville, Maryland, and in 1961, joined NORSHIPCO as an Electrician/Planner until his retirement in 1998. "RR" married the love of his life in 1947 and had a wonderful marriage that lasted for 64 years. He was a Roman Catholic and a founding member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and a member of its choir. Other memberships include: American Legion Post #327, Military Officers Assoc., VFW, Fleet Reserve, Tin Can Sailors, and he was a proud plank owner/founding member of the Naval War Memorial. Survivors include his son, Allan D. Erbe, and his fiancée, Kathleen Ferris, of Hampton, Virginia, his sister, Dorothy Morse, of New Britain, Connecticut, and two grandchildren, Elliott Raydon Erbe, his wife, Kristen, and Emily F. Erbe, and adopted son, Alexander F. Kalasinsky, his wife, Cindy, and daughters, Sarah and Anna, and twelve nieces and nephews. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on December 7, 2015 at 11:00 AM in St. Pius X. Catholic Church by Monsignor Frederic Elkin,,CAPT,,CHC,,USN(Ret). Entombment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, with full military honors, assisted by Reverend Chaplain Jessie Tate, CAPT, CHC, USN(Ret). The family will receive friends in the Norfolk chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Sunday, December 6, 2015, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. Memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project.
