Captain Mark Gregory Estes, 72, passed away peacefully December 8, 2023. A 
native of Richmond, VA, Mark graduated from J.R.Tucker High School in 1970 and 
the University of Virginia in 1974. Mark then began a distinguished career in 
aviation, first as a pilot in the United States Navy and later as a commercial 
pilot for US Airways. Left to cherish his memory are daughter Brooke Estes and 
her partner Frank Burkybile, son Nathan Estes (Adriana), brothers Timothy Estes 
(Marilynn) and David Estes (Cindy), and a network of extended family & close 
friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Elihu & Jeanne Estes and his 
wife of 37 years, Anne Bundy Estes.
Mark loved fiercely and generously. He was known for his devotion to the 
happiness and wellbeing of family, friends and strangers, and he invested his 
time and energy in service of others. He was sharp, had a love of learning, and 
despite his career and personal achievements, he remained incredibly humble. He 
lived his life with integrity, self-deprecating humor and more than a few 
practical jokes. He constantly sought adventure, and instilled that same spirit 
in his children (one might even argue that he was, in fact, a big kid at heart). 
Even in the face of incurable illness, Mark maintained his kind heart and 
rascally tendencies, endearing himself to all who contributed to his care.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 820 Colonial Ave, 
Norfolk, VA on Friday, December 22 at 12pm. In lieu of flowers, a donation can 
be made to the Huntington's Disease Society of America (www.hdsa.org) or Life 
Rolls On (https://liferollson.org). Online condolences may be shared with the
