The Norfolk Virginian Pilot Thursday July 15, 1954
Miss Martha (Mattie) R. Etheredge, 84, daughter of Maj. W.H. Etheredge and 
Mrs. Sarah Carson Etheredge, died Tuesday at 10:30 p.m. at the residence of 
her nephew, J.M. Etheredge, 1919 Great Bridge Boulevard, after an illness of 
six weeks.
A lifelong resident of Norfolk County, she had made her home in South 
Norfolk for some years. She was a member of the Chesapeake Avenue Methodist 
Church.
Besides her nephew, surviving are four other nephews, Travis Etheredge, 
Hunter Whitehurst, and Forrest Etheredge, all of South Norfolk, and W.B. 
Etheredge, of Washington, and three nieces, Mrs. Jack Hines, of Washington; 
Mrs. Daisy Williams, of Florida, and Mrs. Gussie Berry, of Norfolk. 
The body was removed to the Francis A. Gay Funeral Home, South Norfolk, 
where services will be conducted today at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Magnolia 
Cemetery. The family requests that flowers be omitted.
