M. ETHERIDGE PASSES AWAY Mr. Osceola M. Etheridge, a very prominent and highly respected citizen, fell dead with heart disease last night at 9:30 o'clock at his home, corner of Pine and Lee streets. He had been complaining of feeling badly during the day and retired early in the afternoon and was conscious until a few minutes before the end. He complained of having an attack of dyspepsia and threw himself from the bed and expired. The deceased was born January 16, 1847, in Currituck county, N.C. where he lived for several years. He afterwards became a resident of Berkley, where he lived for a number of years, and then moved to Norfolk, where he resided for seven years, after which he returned to Berkley, where he has since made his home. During his residence in Norfolk he was prominent in business circles. He was engaged in the commission and wholesale grocery business of that city, and was also engaged in the mercantile business in Berkley for a number of years. He was a life long democrat and one of the charter members of the first council of Berkley, in which he served two years. During the Civil War he, with his comrades, took up arms in the defense of his state and served heroically through the conflict, being engaged in many of the prominent battles. He was an esteemed member of Pickett-Buchanan camp of Confederate Veterans, of Norfolk; also of Bruce Lodge No. 80, A.F & A.M., in which he attained to the rank of Knights Templar. He was also a member of St. Paul's P.E. Church. He was married three times, the first time to a Miss Foreman, of Wallaceton; the second, to Miss Hattie Hunter, of Berkley and the third to Miss Alice M. Carter, of Maine, who survives him. He leaves five children, two daughters --Misses Hattie H. and Ruth D.--three sons, Osceola C., Harry J., R. Lee Etheridge; two brothers, Dr. H.S., Wallaceton and Jerome B. Etheridge, of Princess Anne Courthouse. Mr. Ehteridge was ranked among the best citizens of the town and in his death the community as well as his family sustains a great loss. The funeral arrangements will be announced later. **************************************************************** The funeral of the late O.M. Etheridge will be conducted from St. Paul's Episcopal Church this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. Rev. Robert Gatewood, assisted by one of the Norfolk ministers, will officiate. The interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery. The following gentlemen will act as pallbearers: Messrs. McWhorten, George Derby, Watt Womble, Captain J.W. Simmons, W.B.Shafer, C.S. Rogers, W.H. White and Wallace Ferebee.
