                              DIED ON A YACHT

            Keeper Etherige Asphyxiated on Steam Yacht Scilla

Charles Capps is in a Precarious Condition at Protestant Hospital -- Both 
Norfolk Men -- Scilla Belongs to Banker Jarvis, of New York, and is in 
Winter Quarters Here

The trim and pretty steam yacht "Scilla," of New York, owned by Banker 
Jarvis, of that city and Havana, which is at present in winter quarters in 
the Hague, was the scene of a sad and tragic death early yesterday morning.  
Mr. Jarvis not long since cruised up the coast from Florida in the "Scilla" 
and left her in the charge of Mr. James Crawford Etheridge whose home is on 
31st Street in Park Place.  Mr. Etheridge immediately moved on board the 
boat and had lived on her since that time.  
On Monday night he asked Mr. Charles Capps to spend the night with him on 
board.  They went to bed in the captain's stateroom which is near the 
galley.
A fire was left burning in the galley stoves and the coal gas which escaped 
from the galley stove is what caused the death of Captain Tredwell Sands, 
of the steam catboat Lizzie, noticed no sign of life on board yesterday 
morning and took a skiff and rowed over to the yacht.  He found Mr. Etheridge 
was deceased but a remaining spark of life in Mr. Capps. He immediately went 
to work to resuscitate Mr. Capps. Being successful he was able to run above 
and call to shore for a doctor.  One was quickly on the scene and had Mr. Capps 
removed to a hospital.

The obsequies of the late James C. Etheridge, son of Mr. and Mrs. John 
Etheridge, whose untimely death has been noted in these columns, will be 
solemnized from Park Avenue Baptist Church at 11 o'clock a.m. today.
