Evans, known to hundreds of Norfolk residents, and known nationally in the official family of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, died yesterday afternoon at 1:55 o'clock at his residence, 709 Graydon Park. He was 56 years old and had been ill several weeks. Mr. Evans was a son of the late Franklyn P. Evans and Mrs. Ellen Mary Hickey Evans and was a native and lifelong resident of Norfolk. He was prominently identified with Norfolk's business, civic, and religious activities and at the time of his death was president of the Twin City Permanent Building and Loan Association. Among his other former business connections was his association with the old Norfolk Railway and Light Company, a predecessor of the Virginia Electric and Power Company, where he served for years as cashier. For several years he was associated with Maj. Charles G. Kizer in the printing and bookbinding business. He also was a member of the firm of Northern and Evans, men's clothiers, and later entered the same business alone, his store being situated on Granby Street, near Plume. Long Elks' Official For 14 years Mr. Evans was secretary of Norfolk Lodge 38, B.P.O. Elks. He also was exalted ruler of that lodge and district grand exalted ruler for the District of Virginia. He was prominently identified with officers of the Grand Lodge of Elks. Mr. Evans served one term as a member of the Norfolk Board of Assessors, declining a second term because of other business that required all his attention. He took a keen interest in all matters that had for their objective the betterment of Norfolk and its citizens. He had friends in all walks of life and one of his greatest aims in life was to render some service to people who sought his assistance. Active in Politics While he was active in politics and frequently aided his friends in their campaigns for public office, Mr. Evans repeatedly declined to become a candidate for office. With M.T. Blassingham and David Pender, he served on a committee that managed the 1936 congressional campaign of Colgate M. Darden, Jr. He served actively in several Community Fund drives. Mr. Evans was a staunch Catholic and was a member of Sacred Heart Church and the Holy Name Society of that parish. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jennie Callan Evans; a brother, Capt. Clement P. Evans; three sisters, Mrs. John S. Drew, Mrs. Harry T. White and Mrs. John Marion Love and two nephews, Harry P. White and John Durell Drew, all of Norfolk. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning at 10 o'clock at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. **************************************************************************** FRANK A. EVANS - Funeral services for Mr. Evans, who died Monday afternoon at his residence, 709 Graydon Park, will be held this morning at 10 o'clock at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. Edward P. Kilgalen, pastor of the church, will be the celebrant at a low Mass of requiem and there will be a number of priests in the sanctuary. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Members of the Holy Name Society of the Sacred Heart parish held Rosary services last night at the residence. There was a large attendance. Members of this organization, of Norfolk Lodge No. 38, B. P. O. Elks, and of Norfolk Council No. 367, Knights of Columbus, will attend the funeral services in a body.
